Bangkok Dangerous

January 3rd, 2009

By Michelle

We hope you all had a great New Year!

Unfortunately, the party goers at Bangkok’s night club, Santika, didn’t have such a great night. On New Year’s Eve, we were deeply saddened to hear that a fire broke out killing dozens.

When we were in Thailand last, we actually hung out at this club. It was a pretty cool place with a lot of affluent Thais. Initially, it was awkward as is every new club until you get the layout down. Soon we made some friends with a table and an attendant topping off your drinks with every sip. At one point, one of our new friends took Chris out to the dance floor to meet his little sister and then Chris scared her with his over the top dance moves. I also recall a lot of drunken high-fiving!

But the really memorable experience at Santika is the men’s room which is manned by 4 - 5 attendants. Per our dear friend Austin Dunk (who then made Chris use the restroom):

  1. Attendants look through a small window to see who is coming so they can open the door.
  2. Then they lead you to the urinal.
  3. After you finish relieving yourself, they flush for you and point you to the sink.
  4. They turn on the faucet and pump soap into your hands.
  5. Finally, they turn off the faucet, hand you a towel and send you back to the party.

The Thais know how to do it right. You will be missed Santika…rebuild soon.

Our condolences to the families of all those lost in the fire.

I Love St. Pete Art Show

December 31st, 2008

So I’m getting started on my piece for the I Love St. Pete Art Show coming up at Art Pool on the 10th. See if you can guess who this is. I’ll give you some hints: Florida, blackjack, The Rays, chain gangs, ambiguous… I think it’s gonna be pretty funny when it’s all finished up.

Christmas, Christmas time is here. Time for toys and time for cheer. We’ve been good, but we can’t last. Hurry Christmas, hurry fast.

Last year, my friend Emily gave me the coolest present ever. It’s a 4-inch little box with little plastic toys on it. The googly eyes were placed on each and every head. There is also a 1-inch book paper clipped to the top…if you look at it really closely…it’s her design portfolio scaled down.

I ask you to ask yourself, does anyone love you enough to make you something like this??!!?

We hope all our friends have a great holiday season!!!

2012 or Bust!

December 22nd, 2008

By Michelle

So yesterday marked the 4 year countdown till the Apocalypse (you know…completion of the thirteenth B’ak’tun cycle in the Long Count of the Maya calendar on December 21, 2012).

But it just doesn’t seem like enough time. Don’t get me wrong. Chris and I have been very fortunate:

  • We have great family and friends.
  • We adopted the smartest, cutest and coolest dog on the whole planet.
  • We started our own businesses.
  • We’ve watched so many good bands play live (including Chokehold, Mouthpiece, Neurosis, Eyehategod and Carcass)
  • We’ve rode an electric bull with prostitutes in Thailand, partied in an alien space ship in Hong Kong and sat next to a real life geisha on the Tokyo subway.

But there is so much we still haven’t done: I STILL HAVEN’T:

  • Smoked weed in Amsterdam
  • Watched 2001: A Space Odyssey or The Godfather
  • Traveled to the Wolong Giant Panda Research Center in China
  • Attended Carnival in Rio
  • Ate a deep fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich at the Fair
  • Hit someone in the head with a beer bottle
  • Cut off the head of a zombie

And soooo (with a million o’s) more. There isn’t enough time!!! Ugh.

Reax Cover Contest Artwork

December 18th, 2008

Here’s the artwork that I just completed for Reax Magazine’s cover contest for their “Superbowl Extravaganza” issue. We’ll see if it makes the cut. I’m not much of a football fan, but the Superbowl is being hosted in Tampa again this year, so I thought I’d represent with this crazy, monster face football head. A bit different from my normal work, but it was a fun piece to try out. If you are a Florida artist and you have some time this week, put something together and send it to reax@reaxmusic.com.

Thanks to everyone who came out the Dobre Den opening reception on Saturday! The exhibit is on display until Saturday the 20th so stop by between noon and 6:00PM to check it out.

You can also buy the very limited edition Dobre Den print here.

Here are some pictures from the opening. Special thanks to John Pirone for the great shots - as always!

REAX Cover Contest

December 15th, 2008

The guys over at REAX are holding a contest to design the upcoming Super Bowl Extravaganza issue. The best design will grace the cover and the top 10 designs will be featured inside.

REAX distributes about 25,000 copies across Central Florida. It’s great exposure and will look impressive in your portfolio. The deadline is Friday but if you have time, you should submit your football-inspired designs to reax@reaxmusic.com immediately.

New Client Work

December 9th, 2008

Wow, been a crazy couple months planning for and opening the Back in Black T-Shirt Exhibit with Joshua Smith of Hydro 74. Meanwile, I’ve also been doing a ton of client work and I’ve just realized that I haven’t posted any in a while. I’ve been collaborating with Hydro on some projects for Vans, Joker Brand, Teck Deck, and Christian Audigier lately. Also, got a few new shirts coming out for Iron Fist and I did some work with a dope, new international clothing company called Hizoku. PS. If you haven’t seen the Deck Peck site yet, go check that out. I just put up some new skate decks for sale. Pretty dope site. I wanna get a bunch of decks from here. They would make cool Christmas presents if you hurry.

This is what it sounds like when giants cry…

There were so many good fights this weekend. They reconfirmed some things I already knew…Pacman is an absolute beast and Badr Hari is an absolute lunatic (but no less badass).

I also saw the walking freak show, Hong Man Choi lose (again) in a K-1 kickboxing match. But to be honest, he’s been fighting guys that were way out of his league like the mighty Fedor. Plus, he’s been out of action for a few months after joining the Korean army and being released due to a brain tumor found during his medical evaluations…so it will take a little bit of time to get back that killer instinct.

Anyways, if you didn’t know, the Japanese are more into extreme body types than us Americans. They love the Hong Man Choi and so do I! So I was deeply saddened to read that the 7′2″, 350 lbs. Korean told his fans on his blog that he wanted to die and start over again because of the way people judge him by his appearance. It was heartbreaking…where would our world be without Andre the Giant, Yao Ming, Sloth from the Goonies, etc.

So going forward, I will no longer judge a book by its cover (or at least for the next week). Because life would pretty boring if we were all the same boring.
