Custom Guitar: Pale Horse x Six String Masterpieces

I was recently invited to create some artwork for Dean Guitars’ on-going charitable art exhibit called “Six-String Masterpieces“, curated by Curse Mackey. The exhibit features over 80 Dean ML  electric guitars that have been painted by rockstars, tattooists and contemporary artists. It began in 2005, as a tribute to slain metal legend and Dean Guitars artist, Dimebag Darrell Abbott. To date, Six-String Masterpieces has generated over $250,000 for organizations such as Little Kids Rock and the Wounded Warriors Project. Rob Zombie, Ozzy Osbourne, Alex Grey, Mark Ryden, Marilyn Manson, Dave Grohl, Ace Frehley, tattoo artist Paul Booth, James Hetfield of Metallica are amongst the “who’s who” of artists that have painted guitars for the Six-String Masterpieces project.

Needless to say I was thrilled to be a part of this amazing exhibit. I’ve completed the illustration and am cutting some test prints to make sure it matches up perfectly before I send it out for high quality printing and start cutting and mounting this bad boy. After the artwork is done, Dean Guitars will give it a factory finish and drop in all the hardware for the show! I’ll post continued progress on this one for sure.

Super7 Florida and Gorilla Biscuits

Neo-Kaiju fans rejoice!

Super7, the vinyl toy brand, is opening a store in St. Petersburg (residential Old Northeast to be specific and just a few blocks from Pale Horse), which is fucking weird and awesome at the same time! The official opening is this Saturday, August 29th at 7:00pm. Super7 founder, Brian Flynn is expected to be in attendance.

Read more about the store in the St. Petersburg Times.

And for all you hardcore fans, Super7 just released the last version of the Gorilla Biscuits vinyl in GREEN.

Just thinking about the Gorilla Biscuits makes me smile. In fact, one of our favorite people in the whole world got a “poison free” tattoo by Civ himself several years ago. Here is us defacing it after a night of drinking (see boobs and beer bottle in skull). Civ, please forgive us, you are a legend!

Attn Florida: REAX Magazine Needs Your Help

For the last four years, REAX Music and Culture Magazine has been pouring blood, sweat and tears to not only report on what’s happening in Central Florida (and recently North Florida) but bringing cool shit to our scene. Plus, they have done this completely independently and it’s all FREE to you!

But now REAX NEEDS OUR HELP:

“Times are tough for everybody these days, and the publishing and media industries are taking some especially hard hits. Now, we’re not going anywhere; REAX will continue to deliver killer music and culture news, reviews, sarcasm, comprehensive events listings and more for as long as you guys want to read us.

We’re just asking those of you who can to show a little love and help us with the bills. Donors will automatically be entered into a series of special drawings for swag like clothes, event tickets, gift certificates, maybe even a bar tab or two. We’ll print your name in the mag’s masthead as a thank you, too, if you’d like.

We post this request with great appreciation for all you’ve done for REAX, as well as sorrow that we need to come to you and ask for further support. The economy has taken its toll on REAX, and we need your help to continue.”

DONATE:

REAX Magazine has supported the Pale Horse (in numerous capacities) from the beginning and today we call many that work there our friends. We know times are tough and print media is dying and the summer tour schedule to Tampa has been dismal at best. But we don’t want to know what it will be like without REAX. We are a community and we have to stick together. If you can, please DONATE!

OTHER WAYS TO HELP:

If you have a website or blog, write a post or add a banner to your site. Grab one here.

If you are a retailer, restaurant, venue or promoter, looking to connect with adults 18 – 34 in select Florida markets, consider advertising with REAX magazine. Take it from us, a regular advertiser since 2006, it works and it’s very cost-efficient compared to other publications in the area.

And finally, pick up an issue of REAX and tell all your friends about it.

BASK AT THE REAX SPACE:

Also, REAX holds regular art shows at their space.

Pale Horse friend and crazy talented artist, Bask has a new art show, Lucky You: A Mix Tape Art Show with Bask and DJ Mega opening August 28th at 7 PM in Ybor. Come out and support.

Bask also has a new website up at www.knownasbask.com. Check it out.

Our Lady of Lucha Libre

I started creating a new illustration series based on Lucha Libre wrestling masks for some Pale Horse prints that will be available soon. When I was in Mexico watching wrestling in Tijuana I had this image in my head for some reason and I had to draw it up. Here is the line work for the first piece. Stoked on how it looks so far. I’ll post as soon as this one is available online. Stay tuned for more Luchador madness!

Computer Arts & Digital Arts Magazine Press

Got some nice press this month from a couple killer design mags from the UK. DigitalArts asked me create a tutorial on illustrating tattoo-inspired vector artwork, as well as provide the final image for the cover of their D&AD Special 2009 issue. Go pick one up to get all the tips and score some exclusive freebies from theGoldenBlack.com on the disk. Also received some love from ComputerArts issue 163 in the Output Design Showcase. Got to talk about Back in Black 2 a bit, give some shoutouts to Hydro74, Munk One, ISO50, Brian Morris and share the spread with 123Klan and Julie West. CA also included a selection of my work on the included disk. Check out the images below for some quick shots of the spreads.
